4224
The idea for this project can be traced back to a artistic research project Ms. Mei started couple years ago, called "ISLE 4224". The idea of an ISLE / Island came from a saying,”man and woman are never an island of their own: namely, No Man is an Island”. The saying means that no one is self-sufficient; everyone relies on others. Human beings necessarily depend on one another; it is part of nature.
This expression is a quotation from John Donne's Devotions (1624): “No man is an Island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the Continent, a part of the main.” So the concept that we are all connected is not just a spiritual cliche or an intangible philosophical one, but actually the threads that weave the world are often hidden underneath to the fleshy eyes, invisible or ignorant to see for most of us. They can only be seen through opening our senses in our bodies. Thus, the body with an awared soul becomes a vehicle to journey through images of infinite time and space.
With this concept, Mei have made series of workshops and exhibition installations as well as live performances, and a book of the same name from a commission for one exhibition in Taipei: it reflected on contemporary local issues as well as looking globally. This book has also recorded some of her artistic approaches: mixture of researches from a distinctive biographical-style and surrealistic performative elements of storytelling, melting the traditional eastern views projecting onto the modern tomorrow's bodyscape.
